Roofing in Plainfield, Indiana

Plainfield grew up along the Historic National Road, and it has the oldest housing of Hendricks County’s three largest towns: about 28% of its roughly 13,400 housing units were built before 1980, compared with about 8% in Avon and 21% in Brownsburg. The town has grown steadily since, with 24% of homes from the 2000s and 26% since 2010, according to the Census Bureau’s latest estimates.

Older Plainfield homes

On a house that has been reroofed once or twice, the important work is the part you do not see in the finished photo: a full tear-off, a check of every sheet of decking, and new underlayment, drip edge and flashing. Building codes generally allow no more than two layers of shingles, and laying a new roof over an old one hides problems in the deck.

Older Plainfield homes are also the ones most likely to have thin attic insulation and limited ventilation. Together they make an attic run hot in summer, which bakes shingles from below, and warm in winter, which melts snow that refreezes at the eaves as ice dams. A reroof is the right time to fix both. See attic insulation.

Newer Plainfield homes

Houses built in the 2000s are now roughly 16 to 25 years old. If yours is still on its original roof, an inspection will tell you whether it has years left or whether to plan for replacement. For homes built since 2010, the usual calls are wind repairs and storm checks.

How a roof project works with us

  1. Free inspection. We look at the roof, gutters, siding and windows together, because storm damage rarely stops at the shingles.
  2. A straight answer on repair or replacement. If a repair will do, we say so, and you get a written estimate either way.
  3. Insurance, if it was a storm. We document the damage and work with your adjuster, and keep you copied on that correspondence.
  4. Installation and walk-through. After the work is done we walk the property with you before we call the job finished.

Questions we hear

How do I know if I have ice dams?

Icicles and thick ridges of ice along the gutters in winter, and water stains on ceilings or walls near the outside of the house. The long-term fix is usually more insulation and better ventilation, with ice-and-water protection along the eaves when the roof is replaced.

Should I replace my gutters with my roof?

If they are sound and draining properly they can usually stay. If they sag, leak at the seams or overflow, it is efficient to replace them at the same time.

Can you repair just part of the roof?

Often, yes. Isolated wind damage, a leaking vent boot or failed flashing can be repaired. If the roof is near the end of its life, we will tell you whether a repair is still worth the money.
