Window repair in Zionsville, Indiana
Zionsville is the one town on our list where replacing original windows is usually a mistake, and the town itself has spent seventy years making that case.
James Mullikin, the Boone County surveyor, platted it on 5 November 1851 and it was formally established the following January. Through the 1950s and 1960s residents restored the village’s nineteenth-century cottages rather than clearing them, remodelling the centre in an early American theme and turning a small commuter town into somewhere people drive to on purpose. Since 1983 the town has capped new housing at fifty units a year to keep it that way.

The village cottages
These are the best window jobs we get. Nineteenth-century sashes were made from old-growth timber, denser and far more rot-resistant than anything milled today, and the joinery was cut to be taken apart and repaired rather than thrown away.
What that work usually involves: re-gluing and pinning loose joints, splicing out any rot at the sill or lower rail, removing perished putty and re-bedding the glass, replacing broken cords, worn pulleys and failed balances, and putting the original hardware back into service. The sashes come to our shop and your openings stay closed and weathertight while they are with us.
Why replacement is usually the wrong answer here
Three reasons, in order of how much they will cost you.
A modern replacement will not outlive the window it replaces. The sash in your house has already lasted 130 years. The unit going in is engineered around a sealed glass edge with a working life of fifteen to twenty-five years.
It will not look right. Period sightlines, glass thickness and muntin profiles are not what modern units are built to, and on a village elevation the difference reads from the street.
And it is not necessary. Almost everything that fails on a window of that age is a component, not the window.
The subdivisions east and north
Not all of Zionsville is the village. The newer stock that went in as the population more than doubled after 1970 has sealed double-pane glass, and that is a different job: when the edge seal fails you get haze and permanent fog between the panes. The frame is nearly always sound, so we replace the glass unit and leave the window in the wall.
